By now you have likely heard of SMART goals.
I know that I have talked about them before and while I believe smart goals are essential…
I also believe there is one thing that deserves equal attention when it comes to actually reaching your dreams and that is...
To define your personal mission
SMART goals and personal Mission statements, that’s what we are going to discuss today.
This is a personal strategy that I use constantly and what better time to discuss it than at the
beginning of the year! A mission statement will keep you focused even when obstacles get
in your way
Your mission, should clearly outline the end result that you wish to reach.
I don’t believe this needs to be “SMART”.. In fact, the contrary, while it should be specific
I don’t necessarily think they should be time bound and I certainly don’t think it should
be realistic. This should be your time to dream… time push the limits and go big. This
mission statement is the end result you desire
If you could choose exactly what you want, forgetting financial, geographical, social or time restrictions of any kind, what would you choose? Your mission should be a true reflection of your ultimate desire.
This mission statement keeps you striving towards a single purpose, something that is so important to you that no matter what, you will continue to push through adversity and all the small failures along the way.
SMART goals are, how we structure the path towards our personal mission.
Using a series of small, SMART goals, Directs our day to day activities in order to
eventually achieve our statement
To give you an example.
An athlete might have a dream, (personal mission) to
race at the Olympics. “I am going to compete at
Olympic level”, is the dream and providing it is your
true passion, even through adversity you will
find motivation day in day out to persevere. What we
need though are short term goals that push you
through the steps required.
A SMART goal is perfect for this and might be “I want to enter a local level competition within
6 months with a X result” Once success or failure of that goal is achieved, the next smart goal
is set and so on until you reach your dream.
For me personally, my mission was always “time and financial freedom at 30"
That was the dream... And to be honest in the early stages felt like simply that “a dream”
Society will almost have you believe it's unrealistic, so there were certainly some moments
of doubt, however, I desired it so greatly that it inspired me every day to work towards it.
The problem was, how do you actually start such a seemingly difficult task? We need to start
somewhere and again is where smart goals are perfect. Something that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time bound.
It’s important that these are SMART goals so that you do start to see and feel success along the way that will contribute to your motivation.
For instance, some of mine were, “I want to buy a house within X months, renovate it, resell it for an X profit within X time period. I want to get my first referral in my online business
within 3 months. “I want to withdraw my first $1000 from my online business within 6 months" "I want to build a team of 10 people in my networking business within 6 months"
"I want to have my own team training system in place within x time. Have had countless goals
like this.. Each one leading to a more ambitious result than the last. Eventually moving to more
significant income, team building and team training
All of which were realistic and attainable, but never forgetting the true goal which was
of course was, time and financial freedom by 30. It was these smaller realistic goals that
allowed my gradual progression without the feeling of defeat
What I find so effective about this system is that it gives you a chance to really dream and
reach for the stars. Regardless of your situation now, you can create a vision for exactly where
you want to be or see yourself no matter how ridiculous it might seem in the present. We then
simply build the map to that destination using SMART goals time and time again
These are of course all financial goals as my mission was time and financial freedom, however the principal can be applied across any goal in life
Take a moment, define your mission. Then define the first SMART goal required to begin working towards that mission.
Goal setting is absolutely essential to our success. If you don’t know where you are going, how can you ever expect to arrive at a desired destination.
Time to make this year the best year yet!
